What have Nick's employers had to say about the man himself? Here are the profiles Nick has been given by Virgin Radio and Talk Radio...
Virgin Radio - New Profile
Nick Abbots life long passion for music and radio has culminated in a coveted position in the Virgin Radio line-up.
Nick attended Brunel University in West London where he graduated in Psychology. It was here that he joined the University Radio which lead to an interview with one of his all time radio heroes, the late Kenny Everett.
Despite advice from Kenny to steer clear of the radio industry, Nick made the move to Radio Luxembourg where he transformed a pop music show into a vibrant talk show within a matter of days. He then moved to GLR in 1988 to host the coveted Breakfast Show before joining Virgin Radio in 1992.
During his first spell at Virgin Radio, Nick hosted the 10pm-2am slot, combining music with phone-ins. Nick now hosts the weekday lunchtime show between 1pm and 4pm and the afternoon show on Sundays.
Virgin Radio - Old Profile
The Manager of the Tudor Rose Steakhouse restaurant stood impatiently waiting for a certain young waiter called Nick Abbot who was on the rota to work. What the manager didn't know was that `The Who' and `The Outlaws' were playing a gig in town that night. Nick Abbot did know. He lost the job.
Make no joke, Nick Abbot is a serious broadcaster. A proud 37 year old he has spent his life flirting with, talking to, discussing about, interviewing, recording, re-recording and virtually dreaming music and radio, culminating in a coveted position in the Virgin Radio line-up.
London born Nick spent/mis-spent his youth following punk, skiving off school (the same one as Keith `Prodigy' Flint) to sneak home and switch on John Peel to catch the latest tracks or replay his favourite Bowie records. To Nick's credit he saw virtually every punk band live except, ironically, `The Sex Pistols' and `The Clash', so unlike some of the world's plastic jocks he has a huge musical knowledge and interest.
Brunel in West London was Nick's choice of university where he gained a Psychology degree. However he picked the Uni because of it's radio facilities. As a report for the college radio he managed to get an interview with the late Kenny Everett (one of Nick's radio heroes). The advice from Kenny?..."Don't get in to radio", Nick didn't listen.
Nick's radio success took him to Radio Luxembourg where in a matter of days he transformed a pop music show in to a talk show. Increased ratings meant that the management left him to his own devices as they worked brilliantly. From Luxembourg he moved to host the first GLR breakfast show which he claims to have hated.
Dubbed `Nasty Nick' during his first spell at Virgin Radio, Mr Abbot hosted the 10-2am slot, during which he combined music with phone-ins. These now notorious phone-ins got him and his acerbic wit in trouble when he was fined by the Radio Authority.
With a lot of water under the radio bridge Nick has been welcomed back to the Virgin fold to present a lot of the shows while other jocks take holidays. His matured and more calculated brand of entertainment is making it virtually impossible for the management not to give him a full time slot.
Nick also presents regular shows from the Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street and spends his spare time mixing house music and going to the gym. Watch this space as people with a lot to say will always be heard!
Talk Radio - Old Profile
Nick Abbot was born to do his current job. Five nights a week he spends two hours talking about nothing and everything. The only thing you can be sure of during this programme is that you will be entertained.
Nick describes it as a 'freeform comedy show'. It's certainly unique and offers something you won't find anywhere else on the dial.
His first foray into radio was during his student years at Brunel University in west London where, while studying psychology, he was a regular presenter on the university station.
But it wasn't until several years later that returned to the airwaves when he discovered his local YMCA had an in-house radio station and offered him a job.
It was while there that he was discovered by John Revil and asked to work at the newly launched Virgin Megastore radio station - on which he can occasionally still be heard.
Radio Luxembourg was Nick's next move where he was sent a tape of an American talk show and it was then that he decided to become a talk show host. He changed his show overnight, from all music to all speech. He moved onto Virgin Radio where he presented a variety of speech and music programmes.
He has perfected his talent for talk on Talk Radio where he has developed a loyal and growing audience. Tune into Nick Abbot from Monday - Friday between 7 & 9pm only on Talk Radio.
